About the Work and Career Domain

A Better Way of Livelihood

Work is an important part of adult identity. It is an opportunity to earn money, but also to build friendships, learn new things, and achieve a sense of accomplishment, competence, and pride!  Work also gives people something to do with their time, adds structure to their day, builds social networks, and helps attain a sense of purpose.  However, if you are embarking on a different type of work or if this is your first real job, it is important to understand the difference between a job and a career.  A job is more short-term oriented and tends to focus purely on earning money.  Having the right job can greatly increase satisfaction with the quality of life.  On the other hand, a career is a long-term professional journey you may determine based on your passions. It is the path you embark upon to fulfill your professional goals and ambitions.  A career may last for your entire life.

So, the question you need to ask is how much do you know about yourself?  As you embark on your professional journey or may be choosing a different career path, your choice should be aligned with your values, interests, abilities, and life purpose.  You may require a certain level of education or a different kind of training to achieve your goals.  Having a good match between your “self” and your chosen career enhances your personal growth and development and increases your sense of Well-being.
